Montefiore Cemetery

The Montefiore cemetery in Las Vegas, New Mexico, was founded in 1881 by Jewish pioneers. The cemetery is described as a mute testimony of Jewish presence in New Mexico since early European colonization. Congregation Montefiore was the first Jewish congregation in New Mexico. Formed in 1884, it held dedication servives September 26, 1886. The congregation is named after the world famous British philanthropist, Sir Moses Montefiore.
A yearly spring cleanup sponsored by the New Mexico Jewish Historical Society and the Montefiore Cemetery Association brings participants from Jewish communities around the state to this historic cemetery.
